BECCS project completes full CO2 value chain with Hoyer

With capture, transport, permanent storage and monetisation now all contractually in place, this milestone completes the project’s full end-to-end BECCS value chain and marks a European first for a Swiss carbon removal project.
The agreement represents a decisive step in moving the project from development into execution, demonstrating that cross-border CO2 transport and permanent storage for small- and medium-sized emitters can be delivered as a fully integrated, bankable solution.
The Swiss-based project, led by CO2 Energie AG – a joint venture between RegionalWerke AG Baden and Recycling Energie AG – captures biogenic CO2 at Switzerland’s largest biogas plant near Niederwil.
Starting in summer 2026, the CO2 will be liquefied on site and transported, by truck and rail, to Denmark for permanent geologic storage, enabling the generation of high-integrity carbon removal credits certified by the Swiss Federal Office of the Environment.
With the transport agreement now in place, the project is among the first in Europe to have all the elements of the BECCS value chain secured, viz: capture and liquefaction at the operational biogas facility; multimodal CO2 transport under a dedicated logistics contract with Hoyer; permanent offshore geologic storage in the Danish North Sea with Project Greensand Future operated by INEOS; and, monetisation of negative emission certificates through long-term offtake, notably the Climate Cent Foundation’s CHF10 million commitment until 2030.
“This agreement marks a true milestone for our project. With capture, transport, permanent storage and monetisation now all contractually secured, this is no longer a conceptual initiative – it is a viable, executable and real BECCS value chain. We are proud to be delivering a Swiss and European first, particularly for small- and medium-sized biogenic emitters, and we are confident that this model can play a meaningful role in unlocking high-integrity negative emissions in Switzerland,” said Philippe Lehmann, managing director at CO2 Energie AG.
