Tank cleaning facility upgrade

news item image
Stolt Tank Containers (STC) has initiated an upgrade to its tank cleaning station at Stolt Container Terminal Houston (SCTH) in the United States.
This comprehensive improvement project incorporates cutting-edge technologies and increased automation, with a strong focus on optimising safety, efficiency, flexibility and sustainability.
Through these advancements, SCTH aims to establish a new global benchmark for tank container cleaning operations.
The project reaffirms STC’s commitment to investing in the American city and enhancing its service offering to current customers while attracting new business.
Efficiency through innovation
The upgraded cleaning station, expected to be completed by the end of the year, represents a step forward for SCTH in delivering high-quality cleaning in less time, using fewer resources, while integrating more sustainable practices. The innovative technology and thoughtful design are anticipated to allow SCTH to double its daily cleaning capacity and broaden the range of tanks it can service.
Six bays will be outfitted with a revolutionary tank movement design method – developed by SCTH and now patented in the US – alongside automated trolleys that reduce safety risks for workers and enhance operational flexibility. An additional three drive-through cleaning bays will cater to hardto- clean products, baffle and compartment tanks, and tank trailers.
An enclosed sanitary food-grade bay will also be upgraded, enabling faster and more environmentally responsible cleaning.
Sustainability at the forefront
A new on-site, state-of-the-art wastewater treatment plant is being constructed, with the aim of reusing up to 70% of the water from the cleaning process.
Throughout the construction period, SCTH will remain operational, continuing to serve tanks from STC and other customers without disruption.
Dan Shelton, SCTH depot manager, said: “We’re excited to upgrade our infrastructure at SCTH to better serve customers and implement market-leading safety and sustainability standards.
“Market demand for tank cleaning in North America remains strong, and we look forward to fulfilling more customer demand with new technologies, more capacity, unprecedented efficiency and greater safety for our workers.
“This investment is a further signal of STC’s commitment to serving customers in North America and a mark of our continued success in the region.”
Phased implementation for ongoing operations
The project will be delivered in two phases to ensure STC’s tank cleaning service remains operational throughout.
In the first phase, concluded in June, the six cleaning bays have been equipped with an automated trolley system. The second phase, ending in November, will see completion of the wastewater treatment plant, the upgraded foodgrade bay, and the additional drivethrough bays for complex tank types.
SCTH was established in 1995, originally operating as a testing and repair facility for tank containers. Successive investments have expanded its capacity and enhanced service delivery for customers worldwide.
