Road tanker firms earn praise from Welsh government

A Welsh Government minister has thanked logistics staff for keeping Wales stocked through the COVID-19 crisis and pledged his support for the industry through recovery.
Ken Skates, the minister for economy, transport and North Wales has written to the Road Haulage Association paying tribute to people in the industry who have worked tirelessly to ensure food and other essential supplies are available to people across the country.
He said: “I would like to put on record my appreciation for everyone working in this sector. You are making a hugely valued and fundamental contribution to the resilience of our country and I thank you for the enormous efforts you are individually undertaking to support the people of Wales.”
Skates pledged his full commitment to support the sector and emphasised the vital role hauliers will play in driving economic recovery.
A survey published by the association revealed that 16% of operators believe they could be insolvent and cease trading within four weeks – most blame plunging volumes.
More than half of hauliers want the UK Government to introduce a weekly furlough model which would help service inconsistent workloads. Others have called for help with business rates and standing costs.
